Kailua

Enjoy privacy and tranquility with easy access to luxury amenities

Welcome to Kailua

Kailua is a charming beachside commute located 15 miles from downtown Honolulu. Originally conceived as a bedroom community, regulations have prevented the construction of hotels and resorts. The result is a relaxed community with everything you'd need within reach, including world-famous beaches, charming boutique shops, and fine dining options.

Kailua is a popular choice for Oahu real estate buyers on Windward Oahu, also known as Oahu’s East Shore. Residents vie for space along the five-mile stretch on Kailua Beach, which is dominated by single-family homes. Other property options include condos, townhomes, apartments, and new constructions. Lanikai is home to some of the most exclusive properties in Kailua, as are Kailua Estates, Enchanted Lake, Kailua Beachside, and County Club Knoll.

Local Lifestyle

Kailua boasts a unique charm with chic boutiques, delicious eateries, and cozy coffee shops. Residents in this tight-knit community enjoy access to the beach and endless opportunities to connect with nature. Kiteboarders flock to Kailua Beach during the windy season, and when the weather is just right, you'll find locals surfing or boogie-boarding the waves. Residents love being close to downtown Honolulu, which offers more shopping, dining, and entertainment options.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Boots & Kimo's Homestyle Kitchen is a must-visit if you are nuts about pancakes. Their macadamia nut sauce and fluffy island pancakes are a match made in heaven. For lunch or dinner, their short ribs and fried rice are a culinary delight. The space is sunny, spacious, and plastered with sporting memorabilia, and the food is sure to bring you back time and again.

Picturesquely situated across Kailua Beach, Buzz's Original Steakhouse is a bustling restaurant that serves tantalizing steaks, seafood, charcoal-broiled burgers, and refreshing cocktails. Open since 1967, this eatery also has great vegetarian options and salads. It offers an intimate dining space, a full bar, and cozy outdoor seating with views of Kailua Beach Park.

Nico's Kailua is a casual eatery showcasing the freshest fish hand-selected at the Honolulu Fish Auction every morning. Like the original Nico's Pier 38, guests order their food at the counter, and it's brought to their table. Remember to leave room for a delicious dessert.

Moke's Bread & Breakfast is a laid-back breakfast restaurant with beachy vibes, patio seating, and a menu that evokes the islands. It's an excellent place to fill up on delectable pancakes and premium Hawaiian coffee before paddling out to the Mokulua Islands. Other menu favorites include loco moco, smoked ahi melt, house-cut ribeye, and homemade corn beef hash.

Things to Do

Kailua Beach Park boasts a silky white sand beach and lagoon-lie waters traced by a barrier of coconut palm trees and tall ironwood trees. The consistent ocean breezes beckon to kitesurfers and windsurfers. The southern end of the beach is a perfect bathing spot for families.

Kailua has some of the best hikes in Oahu. One of the top picks is the hike to Lulumahu Falls, which offers gorgeous views of the Ko’olau Mountain Range and incredible photo ops. The 2.3-mile hike takes you through a bamboo forest and into a green valley vista. The trail can get muddy, so wear shoes with good traction. The Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden Nature Trail near the Kane’ohe Marine Corps Base is a short hike that takes you to a tranquil lake. The botanical garden is also perfect for camping and fishing.

Kailua hosts multiple events and festivals throughout the year, including the Kailua Makai Festival and Kailua-Kona Christmas Parade. But the "I Love Kailua" block party is arguably the biggest one. It features A Taste of Kailua food booths, live entertainment, and performances of the Army Jazz Band and the Pacific Fleet Band. Artwork and crafts created by 50+ Windward artists are also available for sale.
